Plants That Provide Year-Round Interest and Perform Best in Shady Conditions

Gwen Frostic Woodland Shade Garden

Named for Michigan native Gwen Frostic, the Woodland Shade Garden portrays examples of the artist’s favorite subjects: indigenous plants and animals. Spring provides a fresh color palette as native trout lilies, daffodils, wildflowers and flowering shrubs burst into bloom. Tall trees provide a canopy of shade in summer months, when hydrangeas, hostas and fringed bleeding hearts offer a feast for the eyes.

Highlights

The Little Pond

The Little Pond, formerly known as The Kettle Pond, is a unique feature of the Gwen Frostic Woodland Shade Garden. Originally used as a watering hole for cattle, it is now a serene area for relaxing and watching the wildlife, such as squirrels, turtles and ducks.

Shade-Loving Plants

Forget-me-nots, lungworts and Lenten roses are a few of the flowers that flourish in the Gwen Frostic Woodland Shade Garden. Take in the beauty of these plants and others, throughout multiple seasons.

Walking Trails

Guests are invited to wander along walking trails and relax on wooden benches in the Woodland Shade Garden, while they enjoy the shade and peaceful seasonal changes.
