Celebrating 20 Years of The Railway Garden

Since its debut in November 2004, the Railway Garden at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park has enchanted visitors with its miniature world. Originally launched alongside the film adaptation of The Polar Express, created by Grand Rapids’ own Chris Van Allsburg, the garden features scenes inspired by the beloved story, including 15 buildings modeled after local landmarks. Van Allsburg himself attended the opening, praising the Horticulture team’s use of natural materials and a steam engine to bring his vision to life.

Over the years, it has grown to include buildings representing Grand Rapids’ Sister Cities: Accra, Ghana; Perugia, Italy; Omihachiman, Japan; Zapopan, Mexico; and Bielsko-Biala, Poland. The latest addition is the DeZwaan Windmill, installed in 2022.

Today, the Railway Garden boasts 43 buildings, a water feature, and four train tracks. The meticulous construction involves nearly 150 hours for a 500-foot overhead track that winds through three greenhouses. The train travels 15 laps every hour, totaling 1,000 miles each season, with rotating engines and cars to keep each visit fresh.

As you explore, appreciate the artistry in each building and the thoughtful landscaping that combines tropical plants with native species. The design cleverly uses scale to create a sense of wonder, inviting guests to imagine exploring this enchanting miniature world.Join us for this magical holiday experience!
